I saw a clip that Blackwax put on line from an old Soul Weekender. It got me digging deeper for footage of the first major event I ever visited… LiveWire’s Prestatyn Soul Weekender in 1988. Acid was definitely in full effect.
Immediate thoughts that spring to mind are, if this was the fourth one, what would it have been like at the first one before the Acid house explosion ?
I have fond memories of these days (just about) and you can even find some photos in my gallery from some of these. Coincidentally, it would have been exactly 24 years ago today that we would have been there after a night of chalet parties and illegal fireworks. It was at one of these chalet parties that I took my first blast of poppers… I remember it vividly as it took me all of 30 minutes to pluck up the courage. The rest of my crew where one weekender ahead of me as far as the trips and whizz were concerned, it would be another few months before I plucked up even more courage for that at a rave.
Anyway, here is part one and two of the footage… it is pretty enlightening and takes me right back and is great way to start my Sunday. One or two very familiar faces on here and some fantastic music.
I’m going to dig a little deeper now to find out what happened to the LiveWire events and how Southport became the new Mecca… anyone care to point me in the right direction ?
**edit – I’m not sure if ’88 was the 1st one I went to, maybe ’87 ? One of the lads will remember better than me. I’m pretty sure by ’88 I was knee deep in it ! I started this blog without seeing all of the 2nd Video, I remember this is the year Adeva performed and my mate got up on stage with her**
